Irbid (Arabella), the bride of the North, is one of the most beautiful cities in Jordan. It is situated in a plain area of land 65 km north of Amman. It is located in the northwestern part of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is surrounded by fertile agricultural plateau from its northern, eastern and southern sides. It was known by Al-Uqhuwana (chrysanthemum), and witnessed human settlement before about five thousand years BC by each of the Edom, Ghassanids, and Arab civilizations. It is characterized by the Greek, Roman and Islamic civilizations which left archaeological and historical sites in Irbid Governorate. Greco-Roman cities were established such as Irbid "Arabella", BeitRas "Capitolias", Al Husn "Dion", Um Qais "Gadara", TabaqatFahl "Pella",and Quwaylibah "Abello". These cities are the ten cities of Decapolis. TheGhassanids established their state in North Jordan in the area of Irbid, Golan and Plains of Hauran. It was described as one of the most beautiful cities of the Levant countries and it has the Islamic armies' supplies. Christianity spread since the second and third centuries AD.
